More Snow!

Well, still sick. Functioning better than I was last night, at least.

It's snowing again. More to the point, it's snowing sideways.

Mankato, MN, 2/15/2006

When the wind chill is 4 degrees, it's not a good time to be getting sick. Too bad I am. It doesn't happen often; hopefully it's a temporary thing, and I'll recover with my usual vigor.

Did I mention 4 degrees? That's sodding cold. And that'll be the high on Friday, without the wind chill. In Minnesota, in the winter, the only color is manmade. Everything else natural is in greyscale.

I've taken NyQuil and will hopefully finish the post before I start calculating the actual magnetic field strength (measured in gauss) of lemurs.

The original plan was to have made this trip two weeks ago; not only would it have been warmer, I would have been able to catch a Minnesota Wild hockey game. But the customer scuttled that plan, pushing it back to now. I suspect conspiracy.

Think warm thoughts. I'll write more later.

Bastardized Holidays

Warren Ellis has the right idea; "Horny Werewolf Day" has a much better ring to it than "Valentine's Day".

Valentine's Day's pagan origins

"Cheeeeeese, Gromit!"

"Oh noes!"

The snow begins.

The snow is most definitely here.

Update 2/13/06: Getting out of Gatlinburg turned into a real adventure, with all the southern routes being closed due to snow. It made for some good photo opportunities, however, which I'll post in due course.

Go Wings!

Okay, I suppose I should have made this post prior to the last one. Or not! I defy your mundane, linear sense of time!

Red Wings 3, Predators 2. Good game. By the time we found a place to park, and managed to get to the arena, the first period was almost over. As we paused to grab a snack, the horns blared, the crowd roared, and the Preds made it 2-0 in their favor. So I was a little concerned going in. But two goals in the second period tied it up, and Schneider's goal in the third finished it off. Posted by Picasa

Gatlinburg, TN, 2/11/2006

Up in Gatlinburg with Sarah this weekend, and it looks like the snow is finally starting. We'll see if I get snowed in or not!

Damn fine weekend so far. Thursday night we caught the Red Wings / Predators game up in Nashville. Despite the terrible traffic (and worse parking!), it was a great time. If the Wings had lost, I might be a little less sanguine about it.

No big plans for this trip; I think we'll end up visiting the aquarium, and a couple of the other attractions, but I'm not inclined to rush around and see every single tourist trap that's available.

And tourist traps abound. Not as unpleasantly garish as Pigeon Forge, but here nevertheless. The place has changed a lot in the eleven years since I've been here.

Me: "Yeah, Sarah and I are up in Gatlinburg."
Ben: [pause] "You? In Gatlinburg? Wow."
Me: "What."
Ben: "I just remember you cursing that place. A lot."

But, the mountains are still pretty. :) Posted by Picasa

If only it worked this way.
